Journey of Cupverting

Today I started using a menstrual cup and trust me, this is the best decision I have made in my life!

Have you heard of Happy Periods? It’s not about those television ads that portray only one side of menstruation.

For me, Happy Periods is feeling happy about bleeding and being able to maintain hygiene in the best way possible despite the ruthless cramps and crazy PMS.

The reason I decided on using a cup, was since I would be working in Uttar Pradesh for one year as part of the Period Fellowship program where we will be reaching out to adolescent girls and women by building a safe space for them to speak about their own bodies and menstruation.

Having never been exposed to the climate I am facing here right now being in UP, I had to do something about the sanitary pad ft. the heating scenario.

Imagine working in the field on a hot and humid day with the pad making all the fuss it can down there. Personal hygiene is sacred to me and I religiously follow it. Also, it was an excellent way to contribute to the zero waste movement.

But it is always a matter of informed choice, as using a menstrual cup may not be a pleasant experience for all bodies.

Everything comes with its pros and cons but I keep asking, “My dear menstrual cup, where have you been all my life?”

Well, it was a good day to bleed hard and be proud.

The picture is inappropriate for the caption, I know, but my menstrual cup is still inside me and I couldn’t wait for my periods to get over to share this.

There are a lot of myths and taboos regarding virginity and hymen related to the usage of the menstrual cup. If you need any clarifications on it, I would be happy to help.
